The space between Alone and Lonely

Lately, I haven't felt much like blogging.

Not because I'm unhappy. Life has just been busy. Between work, travel, kids, and trying to plan Labor Day before summer disappears, there's barely enough time to keep up with my laundry. 😅

Somewhere in the middle of all that, a question popped into my head:
Am I happily alone, or am I just too busy to notice I'm lonely?

I was with my ex for 12 years, and since then I've had two serious relationships.
Both were with good people.

The problem was less about them and more about my calendar.
Between kids, work, travel, cycling, running, and the occasional desire to do absolutely nothing, dating sometimes felt less like romance and more like another item on my to-do list.

That made me wonder:
Have I not met the right person? Or have I simply gotten comfortable with my life as it is?

The truth is, I still like the idea of having someone to share good news and bad news with. But I also enjoy the freedom of deciding how to spend my time, without having to coordinate schedules or feel guilty about choosing a long bike ride over date night. Which brings me back to the question.

If what I really want is connection, can I get that from my sister and close friends?
Or is there something fundamentally different about having one person who's chosen to walk through life with you?

Still thinking out loud—curious what you think.
