What flows through when…

retirement

Where do you want to retire?

The question came from a French mom traveling with us as we stood mesmerized by the sunset from our Airbnb in Nanaimo.

I’ve been hearing it more often lately, as some of us quietly cross the mid‑century mark.

But whenever retirement comes up, two other questions pop into my head:
Why do we need to retire?
And why wait to do what we want to do until then?

Honestly, I wouldn’t even know what I’d do if I won the lottery and quit my job tomorrow. 😅
Beyond my kids, biking, and traveling—for work or for fun—I work.

And the truth is, I’m not sure I’d do anything drastically different if I stopped altogether. Maybe I’d travel even more? 🤷‍♀️ I genuinely enjoy what I do: the thinking, the problem‑solving, the sense of belonging that comes from being part of a work family.

Maybe I don’t dream about retirement the way others do.
Or maybe retirement isn’t a place or a date—
maybe it’s doing meaningful things before someone tells us we’ve earned them.

Still thinking this one through—curious what you think.
